No No Nando’s

Whether you eat Nando’s or not – you have to admit that their pushing-the-envelope-TV ads makes everyone sit up and listen. Who would have thought that a fast food chain selling chicken could cause so much controversy? First there was their dictator ad showing Mugabe dining with his “friends” Gaddafi and Saddam Hussein, then they humored us with their take on the Santam ad and now they’ve released another controversial one that is not going down too well with the SABC. Their latest ad deals with Xenophobia (no idea who gets to sit around and think up ideas of connecting peri-peri chicken with xenophobia – but hope he gets paid quite a bit for all that creativity)

The SABC was meant to flight the advert on Thursday but has refused to do so due to its “xenophobic nature”. SABC Spokesman Kaizer Kganyago said the SABC felt the ad would incite attacks on foreigners. “For the mere fact that it has a xenophobic undertone we decided not to show it. Nando’s may say that it is trying to promote diversity but what we are concerned about is that the public might interpret it differently. “With foreigners being attacked in South Africa, our concern is that it might re-enforce that… We are in no way interested in commercial gain over the public’s interest,” Kganyago said.

Point taken. But should we always be so serious about everything? It’s just chicken. After all, Nando’s is of Mozambican/Portuguese origin anyway. Watch and decide for yourself.
